MARTIN DONNELLY TO BACK JUNIOR TOUR
6 Day 6th
- 11th AUGUST 2002
The organisers of the Junior
Tour of Ireland have received a major boost with the announcement
of a new sponsorship deal for the under-18 race. Businessman
Martin Donnelly - who has sponsored the Clare hurling and Meath
football teams in the past and currently backs the Stamullen Road
Club has become the main sponsor of the 6-day international
contest, which will be held from August 6th - 11th this year in
the Waterford region.
The most obvious benefit of
the financial injection is a return to longer distances in the
race, as the organisers have been able to switch from the evening
stages which have been characteristic of the more recent editions.
It is thought that this will in turn ensure an even greater
overseas participation this year.
'This really is important
for the race, and for the sport in general', said co-organiser
Phil Cassidy. 'Martin has been really supportative of cycling this
year and is delighted with the response he is getting to it. His
backing of the Junior Tour is enabling the race to continue and
develop, and we are really grateful for his support.'
The Junior Tour will begin
with a 1.7 mile time trial in Dunmore East on Tuesday 6th of
August, and continues with five road stages.
